Types Of Window Installation

There are a number of different types of window installation and they all have a range of costs associated with them. Some installers simply break it up into two categories, replacement and new construction windows, but this doesn't do justice to the variations that exist in the real world. New construction is just that; new homes being built and the company comes in to install the window portion of the build (it's worth noting that some people use this term interchangeably with full frame replacement). Use our free replacement window calculator to see how each type affects the overall pricing.

There are three basic types of replacement windows: insert or pocket replacement, standard and full-frame replacement. In addition, there are several offshoots to these three, including do it yourself installation, historic home replacement, bay and bow replacement and egress window installs. We provide a sample description of each below, along with a basic price range and link to an article which discusses the specifics in more details.

Pocket Inserts

This is the easiest and least expensive installation option and typically runs somewhere between $50 to $100 per opening. An insert window (also known as a pocket window) comes fully assembled complete with a ready-to-install frame.

Standard Installation

Standard installation involves all of the steps for inserts, but usually also includes taking out the sills and then replacing them if needed. It may or may not involve some prep work to some of the frames or jambs if there is any wood rot and other aesthetic blemishes.
