An insert window (also known as a pocket window) comes fully assembled complete with a ready-to-install frame. The old window is removed, allowing the pocket window to simply be inserting inside the sash pocket of the original window. The new window must be properly measured, leveled and shimmed for the window to be square and plumb. The insert is then screwed into the jambs using the screws that come with the pocket replacement. The window edges are then caulked on both the inside and outside.

These sash pocket replacements are the least expensive installation method and an excellent option for projects where the existing window and frame are in good condition. While this is the easiest and most affordable method, credible installers should mention that inserts do reduce the amount of glass area (you are basically adding an extra frame), which can be an issue for smaller openings that don't have lots of light to begin with.
